Diet

Tegus are opportunistic omnivores. That means they eat pretty much whatever they find. In the wild they are seen eating things such as cairn, rotten food, eggs, vegetation, insects, small prey and whatever else they can get to. That is a pretty wide variety of foods. This makes them super easy to feed as they eat pretty much what we eat. The next best thing, you don’t even have to cook their food as they prefer raw.

Feeding Schedule

Hatchlings and Juveniles (0-12 months)

Hatchlings and juveniles should be fed daily. At this stage, they need more protein than fruits and vegetables. Feeding them primarily insects, ground turkey with calcium, appropriately sized f/t rodents and a variety of fruit are very beneficial to your young tegu. Fruits and vegetables should only be around 10% of their diet until they get older.

Sub Adults (1-2 years)

At this age, tegus should be fed 5-6 times weekly. They will need more variety of foods so its time to introduce other meats and fish, and gradually increase vegetation to 20% of their diet.

Adults

Adults feed 3-4 times weekly depending on weight and activity. They will eat a variety of meats, veggies and fruits. Vegetation up to 40% of their diet.
